Waldalgesheim, Germany

I. Site

Waldalgesheim is located slightly to the west of the confluence of the Rhein and the Nahe at Bingen (near Mainz). A farmer dug up the tomb contents in 1869. Nothing is known about the tomb, other than that there was some stone packing involved. The deceased is considered female on the basis of the lack of weapons in the tomb assemblage.

The finds have been thoroughly de-restored and studied in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum, Bonn, and were published in exemplary fashion by Joachim (1995). The images used here are derived in part from that publication, in part from photographs kindly provided by the museum.
