Stereoscopes were invented in the 1850s and almost immediately became a parlor sensation. Stereoscopic images were soon mass marketed, and almost any conceivable subject matter from historic monuments to pornography was soon available for three-dimensional viewing.

The stereoscope image of a ruptured road that provides the background on this page was taken after the San Francisco earthquake of 1906.
