An Explanation of Bibliographical Conventions Used in the Description of Watermarked Paper

Images of watermarks taken from the subject paper group head each page. These images include twins as well as variant states, and all measurements except wirelines are in millimeters. These in-line .GIF watermark images are linked to separate files of the marks, each one a 200 dpi, 8-bit greyscale .TIFF file. Imbedded in the header of each .TIFF file is information identifying the source of the image.

Note: All watermark images are mould-side perspective.

Watermarks

This section gives horizontal and vertical measurements of each watermark.

Dimensions:

Paper

Dimensions: At least 292 x [370]

This section gives the dimensions of the paper sheet, vertical by horizontal. As most examined sheets have been trimmed for binding, dimensions are usually prefaced by "at least." Almost all the examined paper comes from bound folios, where it is impossible to get a clear horizontal measurement; in these cases the measurement has square brackets "[ ]" around it. If the examine paper comes from a smaller-format volume, both dimension measurements are bracketted.

Chainlines:

The chainline measurements in this section have been taken at the top and bottom of the sheet:

Example:

Top: [ nn | nn | nn ( nn ) nn // nn | nn | nn | nn | nn ]
Bot: [ nn | nn | nn ( nn ) nn // nn | nn | nn | nn | nn ]
--Or--
Top: { nn | nn | nn ( nn | nn ) nn | nn | nn | nn | nn | nn | nn }
Bot: { nn | nn | nn ( nn | nn ) nn | nn | nn | nn | nn | nn | nn }

Wirelines: These measurements are given in terms of lines per 3 cm.

This section contains links to the expanded description pages of volumes with at least one example of the paper in question.
