The William Hole Main Title-Page

William Hole produced a number of engravings for Stansby and other London printers during his long career. The main title-page accompanying the Jonson folio exists in three states, each varying as to the contents of the imprint:

  1. Imprinted at | London by | Will Stansby | Ano D. 1616
  2. LONDON | printed by W: | Stansby, and are | to be sould by | Rich: Meighen | Ano D. 1616
  3. LONDON | Printed by William | Stansby. | Ano D. 1616

    4. Hole's engraving is reburnished and used again in the 1640 second folio of Jonson, printed by Stansby's successor Richard Bishop.
