Places to Begin Exploring the Web

General Interest

What follows is a handful of some of the literally thousands of sites available to you on the World Wide Web. Actually, there were more than 80,000 different sites at last count. For the closest thing we have to a comprehensive Web directory and index, go to the Yahoo! catalog. Once you're there, just follow your interests.

University of Virginia
- Your home for the next four years. While you're here, you should be sure to take a tour of the Lawn. It's also useful to know where the libraries are.
The White House
- Hear Socks meow.
The WebMuseum
- Art exhibitions from the Louvre and other famous places.
The Electronic Newstand
- Many of the magazines you're used to paying for are here on the Web.
NetCenter's Entertainment Center
- TV, movies, comics, and more. The fine things in life.
Internet Underground Music Archive
- The real alternative music nation. But, you still might want to check out MTV.
Expo
- Cool stuff from around the globe.
World Transformation
- That's not asking for much, is it?

Writing and Reference Resources

We will visit some of these sites during class--others, such as Webster's Dictionary and Roget's Thesaurus should prove interesting and useful to you throughout the semester. Spend some time browsing, and get a sense of what's out there for you to take advantage of.

The Virtual Reference Desk
- Everything and anything you might need at 2 AM when all the libraries are closed.
Writer's Resources on the Web
- A good, solid index, and an excellent place to start browsing. The Writer's Friend is also a useful page.
Grammar and Styles Notes
- A fully interactive grammar and stlye guide.
On-Line Grammar Handouts
- From Purdue's On-line Writing Lab (OWL). The University of Michigan's OWL is also well worth a look.
William Strunk, Jr., The Elements of Style.
- An on-line edition of the classic style guide.
Chris' Wave: Writing Multimedia
- Along with other resources for those interested in college-level writing, this web page provides FTP links to DOS and Windows software.
Computer-Generated Writing
- Examples and discussions of texts written and authored by computers.
The Inscription Project
- Discussions of the relationship between writing and computing,
Shadow Lands: Interactive Authoring
- Watch a book being written day by day or e-mail the author to participate.
Underground Writing Archive
- Some of the most exciting writing out there today is happening on the Web. Take a look through some of it.
The Writer's Homepage
- An electronic version of that thing in the middle of the quad where anyone can staple something up.
