王者所以親耕，后親桑何? 以率天下農蠹也。
天子親耕以供郊廟之祭，
后之，親桑以供祭服。
《祭義》曰: "天子三推，三公五推，卿大夫士七推。"
耕於東郊何? 東方少陽，農事始起。
桑於西郊 [何]? 西方少陰，女功所成。
故《曾子問》曰: "天子 耕東田而三反之。" 《周官》曰:" 后親桑，率外內[命]婦蠹於北郊。"
《禮·祭 義》曰: " 古者天子諸侯必有公桑蠹室，近外水為之築 (周) [宮]，棘墻而外閉 之" 者也。
