Introduction

The following are playscripts, some unproduced, many unpublished, which either explicitly or implicitly deal with the Viet Nam War, or with American veterans of that war. Some pieces deal with the families of soldiers who never returned. Others are plays in which there is simply a character (or mention of a character) who is a Viet Nam vet.

Because this is my personal bibliographical list, there may be some inaccuracies, and it is certainly not entirely up-to-date. However, since the vast majority of this information exists nowhere else, I felt it would be useful to put it on-line even as it is.

Note: The dates in parentheses are either the date of the first theatrical production or the date on a typescript in the case of an unpublished script. I have also noted when the author is known to be a veteran.

Most of the scripts in typescript form were given me by the author, unless otherwise noted. I will be happy to answer what simple questions I can about these typescripts (or about supporting materials such as reviews of the plays in performance, etc.), but I cannot release the plays until I have had the opportunity to contact the authors for their permission. Kali Tal and I are hoping to place some of these unpublished texts on-line with the permission of the authors. But, that's another project entirely.

All published scripts portraying Americans in Viet Nam will be listed with my full (and accurate, up-to-date) bibliographic citations and annotations in the upcoming 3rd Edition of Vietnam War Literature, ed. by John Newman from Scarecrow Press.

When time allows, I will overhaul and update this listing, and include annotations where appropriate. In the meantime, enjoy a dip into the obscure realm of Viet Nam War Drama.
