Folklore is songs and stories; it is ritual acts such as weddings and objects such as wedding breads.

This project proposes to create a data structure to store and interpret the rich variety of materials involved in folklore studies. Using collections of photographs, sound files, and videotapes obtained from extensive fieldwork on Ukrainian Village Life, this project will develop a searchable digital archive, allowing this data to be analyzed through multi-dimensional perspectives.

It will utilize emerging data retrieval technologies in image and sound recognition. The database will also chart where the data was collected and when it was recorded, so that we study folklore as it changes over time and place.
