Was the bench originally used as a seat at a work table? Perhaps
for an artisan or craftsperson? Or did it provide seating at a supper
table? Three children might have sat on it at mealtimes. Of course,
it could have been used as place to sit and take off boots in a
mudroom, or it might have been porch seating for hot evenings. There
are a couple of scratches on the bench, as well as a notch or two
along its, but there's no telling what might have produced such
Its original owners? I guess they liked green paint, for whatever reason, and left it as a mark of the past ownership (if not use) of this object which I am now so happy to have.
I have never sat on the bench.
When I first go the bench, it filled the coffee table void in my apartment living room. Now it is at the head of my bed to hold books, a lamp, my alarm clock and a framed photograph.
Is it also the first piece of a collection of painted furniture?
