This document uses cross referencing conventions that support viewing both as online hypertext, and as hard copy. Viewed online, links to footnotes and bibliographic references will summon the reference in a frame window at the bottom of the browser (if viewed without frames, these references will appear in a separate window).
In hard copy, bibliographic references can be followed by the identifiers in square brackets. Footnotes are indicated in the text using numeric superscripts, and are printed at the end of each chapter. All documents have a wide left margin, allowing printed pages to be inserted into a three-ring binder.
Images occurring in the body of the text are sized to fit within a maximum width of 400 pixels and a maximum height of 300 pixels; this allows a browser to be set to a narrow width for easier on-screen reading, and keeps the images on a single vertically oriented page when printing. Nearly all such images in the text are linked to a double-sized image which appears in a separate window from the text, allowing the reader to closely inspect an image in one window without losing the place in the text.
