First Distribution Description

In providing content to MESL, the National Gallery of Art (NGA) intends to follow the publication schedule of its systematic catalogues which document the NGA's holdings in paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts. At the time of the 1st MESL distribution, six (6) volumes in this series had been published. Their titles are reflected in the following summary of NGA objects included in the 1st MESL distribution (total NGA contribution: 725 objects in 739 records):

1. Early Netherlandish Paintings (15th and 16th centuries)

2. Spanish Paintings (15th-19th centuries)

3. American Naive Paintings

4. British Paintings (16th-19th centuries)

5. German Paintings (15th-17th centuries)

6. Western Decorative Arts (Medieval, Renaissance, and Historicizing Styles including metalwork, enamels, and ceramics)

7. American Paintings (18th-20th) Group of 155 American paintings requested by MESL universities that do not correspond to a volume of the NGA Systematic Catalogue. The NGA is not distributing extended information (i.e., accompanying documents) for unpublished objects.

8. Italian Paintings and Sculpture (16th century) Group of 44 Italian paintings and sculpture requested by MESL universities that do not correspond to a volume of the NGA Systematic Catalogue. The NGA is not distributing extended information (i.e., accompanying documents) for unpublished objects.
