That evening, Melissa and I watched the shuttle on television.

Jacob and Melissa live right outside of town, on the edge of a government-owned desert, home of the Army's Deseret Test Facility. Jacob keeps his inherited bee stock in the backyard, using the hives as a private place for mediation. One afternoon, as we watch and he remembers, Jacob suffers a fugue while working with the bees. Afterwards, he feels that he has traveled somewhere, though he can't imagine where or how.
That evening, Jacob and Melissa spend their last hours together.
