These main divisions are slightly less than the English inch, by an amount varying from 3/16" to 3/8" less in the total length of the plate, about twelve and a half inches. This shortage conforms to what might be expected from the shrinkage of the paper after impression, so that the divisions were doubtless intended for English inches and tenths.
