Description: Blank sheet of paper with remains of two small paper hinges. The sheet with the studies for the Capitol in ink and wash used to be mounted on this sheet of paper using the paper hinges.(recto)

Condition: Linen backed, remains of two paper hinges (each 1/2" x 3/16") at approx. 1-1/8" from left edge, upper hinge at approx. 2" from top edge and lower hinge at approx. 3" from bottom edge (distance between hinges approx. 7" which is height of sheet with ink and wash studies of Capitol), light horizontal stain in line with lower hinge, good condition overall

On side without coordinate lines [recto side], center area is rectangular and all rooms are labelled. On side with coordinate lines [verso side], center area is also oval and rooms are not labelled.

Condition: Silk encapsulated, loss along left edge (right edge on verso) patched with Fabriano paper (20th c.), dark fluid and mildew stains filling left half (right half on verso) of sheet with lighter stains, mottling and discoloration on right half (on verso, left half shows only light stain spots), parts of drawing missing due to loss and running out of space

Commentary: This is one of three sheets of paper with the number N 388. This sheet appears to have been attached to a blank sheet of Paper BB with two small paper hinges. Nichols note: A modified scheme of this arrangement was later used for the Rotunda at the University of Virginia.
