Jefferson on Architecture
Although Thomas Jefferson never wrote a treatise on architecture there is imbeded in his
various writings and letters consideable commentary upon the art. Scholarship on Jefferson's
architecture has been limited by a lack of documentary material on exactly what Jefferson
said about architecture. The following selection attempts to partially fill that void. It
indicates what Jefferson liked and disliked in buildings, what he felt about different
authors, and some of his ideas. More of Jefferson's writings can be found under different
buildings.
