[Introduction]

It is only by means of a mother's behavior that worthies and sages come to possess wisdom. Their actions are an emblem of correct behavior; their words are aligned with righteousness. From the time of conception, they nurture sons and grandsons, gradually instructing and transforming them. Having established them with virtue, they bring about their achievements and accomplishments. Female kin1 and mothers who examine these exemplars should make them their models.

Notes

1. The word gu () has various definitions.
