At Copper Lakes the municipal utilities of stormwater infrastructure and flood control have been transformed into a useable community landscape. The draingeway is the central organizing feature of the development and the major content of the communitys civic landscape. Rather than locating the developments parks and recreational facilities at the entry as a signpost, the community landscape occupies the center of the 300 acre site. The design develops the stormwater into a meaningful design element by weaving into the community center and pool facility, a lakeside spring, and a long, winding vista that emphasizes the landscapes strong horizon. The design was accomplished by working closely with the projects civil engineers, often trading roles in the project development. Kathy Poole at the SWA Group, Inc.
