Wildflowers. Crushed stone. Long stone edges. Earthen mound. Garden pavilion.
This simple residential garden was designed to make big impacts with inexpensive
means.Inserted between the house and its side fence, the garden fills an
empty space with a burst of wildflowers from April to October. Its central
path doubles as a bocce ball court. The tower is a both a play structure
and a garden pavilion. Its ground level has been dubbed a ‘hotel’
by the family’s children. The family suns and lunches on the second
level--and slides down when they are finished. The earthen mound beyond
reinforces the long garden axis. Its heigh corresponds to the pavilion’s
second level, enabling it to act as both lookout and play hill.
