The quizzes in the Living Writers English course at Colgate University were not intended evaluate the significance of students' encounters with each of the 14 writers over the course of the semester; they were merely to ensure that students were present and awake. I tallied their quizzes. When the question was, "What one piece of music did Reginald McKnight listen to as he wrote his novel, I Get on the Bus?" there were varied semi- correct responses. While not accurate, the guesses "Tangerine Dream", "Something by Extreme", and "Allah Supreme" came dangerously close to "A Love Supreme."

When the question was, "Complete this statement made by Garrett Hongo: Poets live with language in the ___________" many supplied possible answers: "book", "journal", "bank account", or "word processor." Very few students remembered that his assertion had been, "Poets live with language in the BODY."
