A young American woman interviewed after the assassination of Yitzak Rabin stated she knew why he had been murdered. I waited to hear a declaration of political zeal or an assertion of the importance of land over peace. Instead she told a story of an encounter Mr. Rabin had a few weeks before he was killed. A Biblical challenge was made to the peace process: the land of Israel is a gift to the Jews. I don't know how he responded, but this young woman felt he denied the truth of the Torah, ignored the validity of the Word, and for that God chose to kill him. In my mind, it is the greatest crime to use the Torah to justify violence and legitimize hatred. Yitzak Rabin will remain the man who said, "Do not let the land of milk and honey become the land of blood and tears."
