Designing for the Environment

Where do ideas come from? Designs and inventions often result from problems we notice in everyday life. Consider environmental concerns. We are all aware of the need to reduce auto emissions, conserve fossil fuels, etc. How many of us would have thought to conserve fuel by monitoring the tire pressure of cars? Or to conserve water with a dual-flush toilet? These are simple everyday improvements which can have large impacts.

Think about problems you have noticed - things that have bothered you. Then address possible solutions. Carry a notebook and write ideas down as they occur to you. My list of concerns would include:

  1. Internal Air Quality

    Sick building syndrome
    Indoor air quality monitor
    Indoor air quality system
    An allergy free room/house

  2. Harbor Pollution

    Environmentally safe powerboats
    Systems for removing and/or
    preventing floating oil and junk.

  3. Buildings

    Increase energy efficiency
    Materials
    Layout/configuration
    Controls

  4. Vehicles

    Human powered
    Alternative energy sources

  5. Consumer Products

    Throw away appliances
    Disposable packaging
Obsolete technologies (but still potentially usable)

These are just intended to get you thinking. Many other categories and examples are readily available. Come up with a list of your own.
