Kenneth Schwartz, FAIA, is an Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Virginia, where he served as Department Chair and Associate Dean. He has been on the faculty of UVA since 1984. In the office of Schwartz-Kinnard, Architects, he has won four national design competitions exploring the constructive force that sensible urbanism can play in rebuilding cities. He has completed numerous private commissions in Charlottesville, Princeton, New Jersey, Rochester, New York and New York City. For the competitions and early residential work, the Architectural League of New York in their Young Architects Competition and lecture/exhibition series recognized him.

In 2001 he opened the Charlottesville urban design office of Renaissance Planning Group to focus on community design and the integration of land-use with innovative transportation strategies. The office currently employs four full time professionals (urban designers and one planner). In collaboration with his Charlottesville office and the "home office" of Renaissance Planning Group in Orlando, Florida, he is doing work in several communities throughout the Eastern seaboard. He recently completed the Master Plan commission for Crozet, Virginia in Albemarle County, twelve miles west of Charlottesville, a project that he is leading in collaboration with Warren Byrd, ASLA. He recently won a tri-party commission to study and plan a key area for the City of Charlottesville, University of Virginia and Albemarle County in one of concentrated growth areas for the community.

Professor Schwartz's service activities at the national level include the National Architectural Accrediting Board, where he served as President in 2001-2002, and several national level appointments with the American Institute of Architects, the National Council or Architectural Registration Boards, and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. He was appointed by the Governor as Chair and Board member from 1995-1997 on the Art and Architectural Review Board reviewing all capital outlay building construction projects for the Commonwealth of Virginia. In 1997, he was appointed as a Planning Commissioner for the City of Charlottesville and a member of the Board of Architectural Review, where he served for five years. He is the founding director of the Design Resources Center, a not-for-profit organization serving community concerns and lower income neighborhoods in Charlottesville.

In the spring of 2003, Professor Schwartz was awarded the University's Alumni Association Distinguished Professor Award.
