Bell's primary concern throughout these experiments was the fact that the pitch of the transmitter varied with the length of the circuit and the number of batteries in the line; he hoped the local circuits shown here would make the transmitter's pitch independent of the length of the line. The devices shown here include a rubber band attached to the armature on the receiver so as to stop it from vibrating as soon as the transmitter stopped.
