I usually flew from the start of the day.

My specific assignment was the Army's Integrated Air Battle Mission Simulator, where several Pilots could fly at once over a common landscape the size of New Jersey.

	Another landscape, a rippled hillside with a sine-winding road wound across its surface. S-curve of a gradient approach... across the air, across time, across smell and polarized light, speeding through traffic signs posted here high up above the road. His Memory Returns:

At Frisch, Jacob is a programmer writing code for gunsite displays in the simulators. The next day, twiddling code, Jacob feels an explosion in his brain, and remembers a previous experience of disapearance at the hives, which seemed to have occured after hearing voices within the comb. He is so disturbed by the memory that he leaves work, heading home to spend the afternoon watching tv. Inevitably, though, Jacob ends up at his hives.
