Jacob goes to the Garden of Eden:

Standing at open hives, Jacob falls awake into a traveling darkness. Twisting through space, he falls to a patch of land which resembles his ancestral home, the Garden of Eden in Lucas, Kansas. His grandfather, James Hive-Maker, emigrated from England to built a stone log cabin there, surrounded by concrete trees filled allegorical sculpture.

While we patiently listen, Jacob describes the tree-sculpture story of Abel's biblical murder by his brother Cain. Rather than punish Cain, God carved an X in his forehead to protect him. Jacob ponders this riddle, and then returns to the hives, where his body is waiting.
