[back]

Note: 37 Richmond Enquirer , March 12, 1819. Building accounts for Pavilion II, 1819, PP. According to these accounts, Ware and his men also built Pavilion IV and the dormitories adjacent to Pavilions II and IV; Ware supplied the carpentry work and some of the masonry for Pavilion VI. In 1822, Ware was also engaged in the construction of the proctor's residence. It has been described as the most significant house in Washington, after the White House. It remains as the last late 18th/early 19th century major townhouse within the city surviving in its original form. [back]

Note: 38 Building accounts and receipts for Pavilion II, 1819-20, PP. [back]

Note: 39 Building accounts, receipts, and balance sheets for Pavilion II, 1823-25, PP. Evidently Ware did not return immediately to Philadelphia, for he is not listed in the city directories for 1822-25. [back]

Note: 47 James Dinsmore to TJ, Nov. 10, 1818. Building accounts for 1821; journals and ledgers for Pavilion II, 1821; PP. The financial records are somewhat inconsistent. The tin account shows the tin being paid for on Nov. 25, 1821, while the account for Pavilion II shows the same amount being paid on the same date in 1822. It seems unlikely that the building remained without a roof for this extra year. [back]
