When you've arrived at the bottom of the forest canopy, you will discover that there aren't as many trees here as there appear to be from the air. Perhaps only the trunks have been harvested by the hungry farmers, leaving the interlocked, self-supporting leaves intact in the upper canopy, as a filter for moonlight, and protection from foreign-planet predators like ourselves. In any case, once you've shuddered off your parachute, you find yourself alone at night not so far from a long horizon. In the box of your sight, this landscape edge is visible as a line going left to right, somewhere under your nose. You think that you are alone. But you can't be for long. Your blood is visible, a glowing fire on the Antarctic plain... a strange anomaly, perhaps not that appealing to all the local inhabitants and their relatives. There is one person who Is happy to see you, though you are here meeting only by accident... it is that famous addict Mr. Nosferatu, running through the dark towards you, as if he were being chased by creatures who like to Eat Vampires, and who are close on his tail, behind the line-ledge of the horizon in front of you. |
