The cliff-wound wishes that it could just close itself up by huddling up with a similar ridge it sees about two miles away... but how will get over there? The gap is too wide. So all day, the raw cliff, staring out with little eyes that have grown out of the gaps between the layers, just watches the little people in their little cars crawl around on the desert floor... and it resents them. But the desert people aren't afraid. Sometimes, just to scare the cliffs, they'll drive one of their puny bulldozers and a couple of dumptrucks right up the shelf, then dig out and haul away a couple of tons, which they haul away and contemptuously dump right in the middle of the blank veldt.
