Between 1948 and 1965 the Garden Club of Virginia paid for the restoration of the gardens and the surrounding areas of the Lawn. Landscape architect Alden Hopkins directed the work and redesigned the gardens to reflect what was thought to be the contemporary gardens at Monticello and Mount Vernon. This drawing was produced as part of this project.(rgw)
