The intent of this design is to celebrate the reconnection of the Muddy River with the Charles River by opening the watercourse and flooding the spaces between the roads, thus, creating broader vistas both from within the city and as one approaches the city. The proposal intends to create a more substantial and provocative urban experience by combining seemingly disparate systems into a coherent and legible whole.

•Roads and overpasses are restructured to open the urban environment to the Charles and the sky. This is partly accomplished with a system of tunnels, with entrances placed at varying distances from the shoreline, that take vehicular traffic underwater, thereby, heightening the sense of movement from land to water.

•The original shoreline is carved out to open the connection between the two rivers and to surround the gatehouse with water.

•Water floods the spaces underneath the Charlesgate overpass, providing a surface that will reflect the sunlight to the undercarriage and illuminate the shadowed and marginal spaces.

•Widening the constricted Muddy River will help facilitate a flushing action that will relieve some of its stagnate quality. By restructuring the network of overpasses and flooding the spaces between the streets the Muddy River is connected to the Charles in a direct and substantial way, thus opening the experience of the city.
