Other
designers chose to apply not the literal landscape created by Olmsted and
Shurcliff but the principles upon which he based his designs. Adriane
Fowler and Leigh Fitts aimed to express
larger conceptual ideas that are transformations of historical principles.
They did not choose, however, to dismiss the importance of historical artifacts--the
physical landscape that expresses the historical principles. They also exercised
a 'selective restoration' choice in keeping historical elements and areas
that were important to contemporary needs and compatible with their larger
      intentions.
