The project seeks
to strengthen the relationship between the Muddy River and the Charles
as a means of establishing a provocative and enduring urban infrastructure.
As it flows to the north from the Fens, the Muddy River is combined
with urban systems in ways that diminish its intrinsic qualities and
inherent potential. It is constricted through a labyrinth of roads,
overpasses and bridges in the Charlesgate area until it disappears
below Storrow Drive before it connects to the Charles River.
This proposal investigates a combination of road design and water/city
edge development as a reconsideration of the experience of movement
in and out of the city. Through explorations of the relationships
between: light and water, pedestrians and water, city and water, the
project seeks to "unearth" and exploit the potential of the Muddy
River as a critical component of a dynamic and evolving urban infrastructure.
